Microneedling: What You Need to Know

When you look in the mirror, are you noticing that your complexion is not as even or vibrant as it used to be? As we age, this is a common change, as our skin loses collagen and elastin. If this sounds like you, you benefit from microneedling! This minimally invasive treatment is a great option for all skin types and tones, and can help you meet your skincare goals. Read on to learn more about microneedling and how it can benefit you.

What is Microneedling

Microneedling is a cosmetic treatment that uses your body’s natural healing process to improve the look and feel of your skin. Using a special microneedling device equipped with many small needles, micro-wounds are created in the treatment area, stimulating collagen production for a refreshed complexion. Vitamins and serums may also be applied to these micro-wounds to help achieve optimal absorption.

This treatment is a great option to address the following skin concerns:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun damage
  • Dull skin
  • Scars (including acne scars)
  • Large pores
  • Stretch marks

Your Consultation Appointment

The first step toward a microneedling treatment is a consultation appointment with one of our board-certified dermatologists. During this meeting, he or she will evaluate your skin as well as speak with you regarding your health history and skin concerns. If it is determined that you are a good candidate, there are some things you must avoid prior to your microneedling treatment, including retinoids and exfoliants, excess sun exposure, waxing, shaving, electrolysis or depilatory creams, and Accutane. Our team will provide you with the information you need to prepare for microneedling.

What to Expect During Treatment

During your treatment session, a topical numbing cream will first be applied to the treatment area to ensure you are comfortable. Then, a special pen-like instrument with many micro needles will be moved across the skin, creating very small wounds. This will promote collagen production, resulting in firmer, more even, and glowing skin. Treatment is quick, usually taking only 5-15 minutes to complete.

Is there Downtime Involved?

After your microneedling treatment session, your skin may be look pink and feel tight and sensitive, which should resolve within the next couple of days.  Sometimes deeper treatments result in tiny red dots and small crusts that heal and flake off within a few days.  You can feel free to return to your regular activities as soon as you wish! We do, however, recommend avoiding direct sunlight, and always wearing sunscreen when outdoors for the best results. Most patients will see an almost immediate improvement in skin tone but the full effects of the procedure on fine lines and wrinkles is most apparent after several months.  Most patients require a series of microneedling treatments, each spaced one month apart.
